I knew the scene would be the basis of a painting, but had no ideas beyond that. Three weeks later my dad passed away. When I reviewed my resource photos and started sketching out ideas in a very stream of consciousness manner, the imagery began to unfold. There are many layers of symbolism involved and I’m discovering that much of it is specific to me and my relationship with my father. But on a general level, the smoke in the distance represents the end of the physical form and my father’s cremation. The figure in the center, loosely based on my sister, symbolizes a centered, strong presence and ceremonial posture. A knowing that all is in divine order. The tiger is passion and vitality, bowing his head to the figure. He is our life force waiting to be summoned. The butterflies playfully represent transformation, both upon leaving our physical forms, and also as we evolve through life. And the pillars, yes, they are the ancestors upon which we stand – and through whom we are supported and loved.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Paul Bond’s award-winning oil paintings live in the spaces between dreaming and reality.

Born in 1964 in Guadalajara, Mexico, he draws from the Latin American genre of Magic Realism where symbolic and fantastic elements blend with realistic atmospheres, unveiling a world where anything is possible. Though I was at home with my wife, I experienced a deeply profound period of personal introspection and transformation. While it has been painful and constricting for many, I feel that from a higher spiritual perspective the experience has been calling for us to individually and collectively take stock of who we are, and who we wish to be moving forward. Accomplished through a stripping away of the distractions that normally keep us from looking inwards. The islands represent the separation from that external busyness. The plants taking over the house is the replenishing of the natural world that we have seen happening worldwide. The tiger symbolizes willpower, courage and personal strength. The qualities I believe are necessary to take each of us through this experience in a fearless and transformative way, so as to emerge on the other side with our humanity expanded and our awareness heightened. The boat is the spiritual journey, the voyage of our lives, floating into view to take the tiger out into the greater world again. Renewed, strengthened, and deepened by this experience.

The mood – especially the light coming from the partially obscured sun just out of view – recalled my experiences as a Hospice volunteer. Being present at the passing of several people from this life has affected me in a very deep and ironically uplifting way. The bubbles with flames in their centers represent the souls of the departed floating peacefully out to sea. Released of all struggle and fear and limitation. This is the way I imagine death to be for the one passing on: a beautiful and liberating step into a broader awareness. Like exiting a stuffy, smoky room. It is said that people who live in a world of uplifting thoughts aren’t facing reality. But the fact is, their reality is different than others’. It tends to match their attitude. They trust that all is unfolding with purpose and their lives reflect that thinking. This is no simple philosophical pondering for me. Indeed, I believe this is the key to an expansive, fully lived life. Challenges still happen. But the difference in moving through them brings to mind the words of poet Patrick Overton:

“When we walk to the edge of all the light we have and take the step into the darkness of the unknown, we must believe that one of two things will happen.
