Inspired by his own experiences within the concept of idealization and infatuation, his pieces embody elements of a tortured fantasy in peaks of emotional disorder. Wolf’s interests in the conceptual, contemporary and DADA art movements influence his style, resulting in a distinct, chaotic presentation that fuses abstract expressionism and urban influences.

Originally working as a sculptor, Wolf has transitioned to a mixed media art practice by creating canvas relief sculptures. Working in layers, he uses materials such as plaster, paint, resin, and canvas. The graffiti drip technique is a staple to his painting style, reflecting the process of his creation in the midst of an emotional chaos captured in the moment. He often finishes his work with a resin cast, applying a slick, immovable layer that enforces a distance between the piece and the viewer. As a result, the viewer is able to see a reflection of themselves in the shine of the resin, mirroring the subjectivity of their own perspectives of love and lust projected onto his work. Wolf creates these abstract, surrealist pieces to express an edgy and mysterious part of his personality as a hopeless romantic, echoing a part of himself as an entity to be desired from afar but not easily obtained.

A significant sculptural material and recurring symbol in his work are roses, representing the process of destruction within its core ideologies of love, beauty and romance. Immortalizing the roses’ desired purpose, he binds them through different mediums like metal, plaster, and paint, applying them aggressively and unapologetically into the texture of his pieces.

In its rough, heavy qualities and bold, glooming colors, Wolf’s work drips and smears a thick skin across the faces of his canvases. The process and outcome of working in these layers hides the emotional depth and turmoil under an obscure, shifting mask over time.Wolf Dé Roses attended Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan and studied Sculpture and Design. My degree in English and writing, and my background in music and theater, make storytelling an integral part of how I express myself. Through my art, I have continuously striven to teach myself to paint the beautiful stories that I see in the natural world around me. Everything I paint has a story, as I attempt to convey a captured, crystalized moment snatched out of a dynamic timeline. A bird caught preening his feathers, an octopus caught mid-escape, a wild rabbit caught with a mouthful of clover. Commissioned pieces are a unique opportunity to tell the intimate stories of the people who will own them. I love painting on three-dimensional surfaces, like boxes and stools and chairs, to find ways to play with the shape of the piece and let it help tell the story. My most recent innovation is to take old, worn out stringed instruments, and reimagine them with epoxy clay and paint into entirely new creations—a violin becomes a heron, a guitar becomes a magical blackbird guarding its nest. The movement of nature, of creation pushing forward, is empowering in a way, and at a time, when such an expression of natural elemental power is both a personal and a cultural imperative.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

I have always had an affinity for the shapes, forms and colors in nature. What I call nature’s architecture. I work with the beauty of nature’s structure, it’s balance, and how one shape or form plays against the other and the power of its color. One of the influences that fuel my desire to create is having the ability to bring this beauty, this vision, to almost any size canvas. There is a certain balance in the feeling of the piece that works. To me, in a world that seems to be devolving into ugliness and divisiveness there is a deep value in calling attention to the inherent beauty of the structure and balance of nature. Whether it comes from the heart of a flower in my garden or the force of a wave rolling in from across the Pacific, the rhythms of nature carry a power I seek to convey to the world through the work I produce in my studio.

It’s a feeling that is immediate. She works on personally handmade cracked linen canvases, seeking universal themes of beauty, nature, and peace in and through the world. Her life-long love of horticulture brought her to focus on botanical subjects, diving into what she calls the architecture of nature. Roberta paints primarily in acrylics and watercolors and then carves the pieces, etching lines into the plaster. Through these works, she seeks to call attention to the beauty inherent in the natural world.

Recently Roberta has become intrigued by the forms and structures that manifest themselves in bodies of water. Using her same cracked linen materials, her most recent work is an exploration of these forms and expresses a feeling of elemental power.

The final product synthesizes organic and inorganic shapes with measured lines of pigment, composing a unique history to be excavated by the viewer. Inspired by Grammatologist Jacques Derrida, Glass breaks apart the language of his paintings, reducing the works to the lowest denominator to explore their meaning.
